Studio visit with Drew Conrad

Biography:

Drew Conrad was born in 1979 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He received his BFA from the University of Georgia (2001) and his MFA from Parsons School of Design (2005). He has had solo exhibitions at Fitzroy Gallery, New York (2012) and Get This! Gallery, Atlanta (2013), and has been included in group exhibitions at the University Galleries of Illinois State University and The Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts. He has been the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship (2012), a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship (2014) and Clocktower Residency (2014).  Conrad’s art has been featured in such publications as Sculpture Magazine, Burnaway, Art in America, Bad At Sports, TimeOutNY, ArtFile Magazine, and Beautiful/Decay. Drew Conrad lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. 

Statement:

I build large-scale sculptures that are concerned with idea of deterioration, history, and collective memory.  The work uses the vernacular of familiar architectural structures, ranging from building interiors and exteriors to roadside billboards.  Comprised almost completely of new materials, the sculptures, ranging from building interiors and exteriors to roadside billboard.  Comprised almost completely of new materials, the sculptures undergo multiple physical process to achieve a fabricated state of ruin.  Each work is assembled as a bricolage of various objects and structural remnants that attempt to reconstitute a new complete and unified whole.
