Eric Helvie (b. 1984 Portland, Oregon) Lives and works in New York City
When I first met Eric Halvie, a pink Snuggie was hanging on his studio wall. Pink and huge, like an elephant in the room, the Snuggie became an object, a 3D painting that is a mock of Middle America. It was the artists dark sense of humor and twisted iconography that got me interested and pulled me in. Halvie has a unique way of absorbing everything around him and than filtering these influences into unique art works. Mastering the usage of images, shapes, tones and textures into fully realized works of art. Since then he has explored and re explored the Snuggies, pipe smoker, Donkey Kong, The terminator and more. Each of his characters is based on references and history, he built them up and then breaks them down, while using Snuggie Fleece as his medium, In late 2008 and early 2009 the Snuggie brand of sleeved blankets became a pop culture phenomenon, Sometimes described humorously as a "cult".
